Soho Dolls
@ The Cluny, Newcastle

They’re loud! Up beat disco/glam rock! To be honest Maya Von Doll disappointed the audience only by her conservative dressing! I was quite dubious about my better half accompanying me to this gig; seems the reports of Maya’s usually risqué attire was enough to tempt him along; however he was to be disappointed as everything was kept under raps! Maybe a mid night gig wasn’t tempting enough to strip down to her masking tape.

Maya is however quite flirty and dirty and has a powerful voice for such a tiny girl. The set was a taster of the new album released 3rd September, ‘Ribbed Music For The Numb Generation’, a massive combination of electro, glam rock, punk and a kind of jazzy hip hop. The crowd were obviously followers of The Dolls and the front row was lined with gentlemen of mixed ages, quite obviously fans of Maya herself. The crowd was modest but obviously enjoying the music and a lot of dancing was being done! Always a good sign I reckon, although from what I hear, a pretty tame crowd to the usual Dolls audience.

Yeah, there were a few catchy tunes:- Stripper, Prince Harry and Trash The Rental, but also a few tracks that just bored me and didn’t do this performance justice and left me just wanting to go home, put my feet up and basically just not be there. Not even the sight of Maya Von Doll sleazing about on the stage did it for my other half either.

If this is your bag, you will enjoy this stuff, if not, just hope you catch one of the nights that Maya strips off!
